I had a couple of units of a coin cell (i.e. CR2032) battery holder (more accurately "clips") which I planned to use in the KiCad project but needed to find a footprint ("module") for them.
I think I acquired them via SF at some stage but when I looked on the site it appears they're not actually a stocked product.
This led to a some rabbit-holing where I eventually located what I think is them. Unfortunately for future purchase they're only available via Digikey but I guess I can work with that...
The style of the clip I have has circles as part of the punched out "arms" that hold the battery into place. But:
They're not the ones used here because those are surface mount and a more "snubbed" are less of a "full-shroud" than what I have. (Ditto for this.) Note the request for a part number which isn't supplied--although the Digikey search in the response does suggest that "MPD (Memory Protection Devices)" is the manufacturer and it might be part of the
They're not the
BK-912 series because those are SMD/SMT, are the "snub" style and have two tabs on each side--although that is what the LilyPad battery board appears to use.
They're not the
BK-883 (manufacturer link) series because while those have the "full-shroud" style, and a single tab, they're also still SMD.
Most of the other results in the search either don't show images or are clearly SMD/SMT.
They're not "Coin Cell Holder - 24.5 mm" either--they match the "full shroud" style and have single tabs but the hole around the arms is slightly different and they're 24.5mm not 20mm--which also means the footprint for "24.5mm Coin Cell Breakout" wouldn't help either, even if it was available. Although, interestingly enough, the background of the image at the top of the datasheet does have the correct circular cut-out around the arm. The datasheet suggests the product is from a manufacturer "Keystone Electronics Corp.".
They're not "Coin Cell Holder - 12mm" (nor the SMD version "12mm Coin Cell Battery Holder SMD") either--they match the "full shround" style, have single tabs and have the circular cutout but are only 12mm not 20mm in diameter. However the linked "Keyelco" datasheet suggests that item with catalog number
3003 does match all the details.
(This isn't strictly in chronological order.) Once I found the manufacturer site for MPD (also & also) I found their full list of CR2032 battery clips/holders/retainers and was then able to find the (apparently) matching part:
However, at this point I discovered that Keystone (aka "Keyelco") products are stocked by Newark and that they offered samples. I contacted them and they got their local distributor to send me some--which are hopefully currently on their way. This makes trying to match my current items somewhat moot as I'll have more of the new samples than I do of the existing--so I'll just make a footprint for them instead, assuming I can't find one. Once I knew I was going to get the through-hole ones I asked for some SMD ones for comparison and they're sending those too so I'll get to compare them.
For future reference here are the Newark links for the two Keystone products:
In addition to the datasheet linked above the dimensions of the parts are also shown in this PDF catalog page. (The Keystone and MPD parts are probably close enough the footprint could be made to fit them both... (Funnily enough, if you look at the helpful competitor cross-reference page you'll see the Keystone 3003 & BK-888 are cross-referenced--nobody else is for that part though. :) ))
I used one of the existing retainers for my veroboard-based frankenxample (still to be documented) so only have one of them left anyway.
So, ummm, that seems excessively documented now. :)
